A clearer solution might be to get rid of the grid altogether. The way out of our current situation is not through further globalisation but hyper-localisation.

Communal energy generation, from localised solar and wind can be stored in batteries, with a blockchain (yeah, that old chestnut) at the centre of the financial side. Surge charging would force heavy users to pay more towards it with the community itself sorting out the repairs amongst themselves.

The energy wouldn't have to travel further than a local village or city block. Crucially it gets people back into the idea of localism.
