Altman strikes me as somebody akin to Zuckerberg, who wants above all to be remembered for something ground breaking.
In Zuckerberg's case he sees the damage Facebook has done to society and so has pivoted to an ethereal 'metaverse' idea whilst ignoring the satire of its fictional origins.
Altman clearly wants to create AGI but knows that GPT has reached the limits of current tech. He needs a shedload of money and a lack of ethical oversight to achieve this goal. Its why he haemorraged so many of the founders in recent months.
They both want to be seen as Steve Jobs or Bill Gates; their posters sat in classrooms for decades to come. But niether of them appreciates the teams and the timeframes that it took for both of those men to change the world.
