An America-centric design model doesn’t help. Car culture in that country is unique, with people happy to drive hundreds of miles at a time to visit places. The spaced out nature of its geography doesn’t help things but this has lead to bigger cars that carry more petrol. The EV has been lead by US innovation and thus built around large batteries and long range journeys.
Compare this to the European and Asian markets. Denser, historic cities with winding streets that were never designed for cars means that smaller city runners are the order of the day. When people have to travel hundreds of miles they take the train. The classic European car is the Mini Cooper or the Fiat 500.
Whilst the EV market awaits its short-range economical ‘Mini’ moment US models continue to infiltrate the Eurasian market and take up too much street side parking!
