Android as a Legitimate Retro Gaming Platform
Filling in the blanks iOS cannot
In a previous article I talked about how I think it’s time to reconsider mobile platforms, specifically iOS as serious video gaming platforms. Apple are not often the first company you think of in the marketplace and yet they continue to support multiple controllers, innovate in accessibility and offer a range of titles unavailable on competing hardware.
Some people might have taken these as the ravings of a deluded fanboy (and they might be half right) but I tend to be platform agnostic so for the sake of balance and because I believe it to be true I would like to make the arguement as to why Android should also be considered a legitimate gaming platform.
The Little Green Robot That Could
Launching in 2008 as a more agnostic alternative to the iPhone, Android has gone on to become the dominant player in the mobile space. Google came out of the gate with a widget-based interface, clever apps that sought to help the user and even kickstarted the Augmented Reality movement.
Android was built to be able to run on $200 hardware as much as $2000 and it is this flexibility that has enabled it to claim a massive 70% market share in the mobile space. But this flexibility and open nature has also unwittingly created a number of issues. With…
