Arguments in favour of keeping lightning largely fall apart when you realise literally every other Apple product, including their TV remote uses USB-C!

It has now become what we used to call an industry standard alongside HDMI, 5G, GSM, USB-A, SCART, DVD, AC/DC, MP3, Bluetooth, SD Cards, WiFi and about a thousand other acronyms we encounter every day.
