As a species we have responsibility to each other. Whilst it is probably true that government handouts have never lifted the majority of people out of poverty, the rest of the tribe chipping in has.

The measure of a person is not how well they've done things on their own or how much crap they have in a cupboard but how much good they have done with their lives. We can't all be Ghandi or Mother Theresa but we can give our time to good causes or, if no such cause exists, light the fire outselves.

Even if its just making a packed lunch for that one homeless person you see every day on your walk from the train to the office so they can exist just one more day. You might even chat to them and learn more about them.

People blame governments or God but in reality the only people to blame for the poverty in the world are us. We have the power to be greedy but also the power to share.
