As I write adventures for my son and his friends I have found that comedy is an underrated part of RPGs. Maybe instead of a group of Goblins who have infested a library what the party have actually stumbled upon is Greenskin Book Club. Maybe the heroes get turned into monsters and the town is the dungeon.

Combat also takes second place to puzzle solving. Put some proper brain teasers in your adventures that don’t require dice rolls to solve. Give the players handwritten clues, spells in foreign tongues or just a local rogue to outsmart in a bar. Make them play cards with the denizens of a tavern. The players will be talking about solving difficult puzzles for years, not that time they rolled some dice.

Keep a biblical account of what things and trinkets they pick up. It’s always fun to see a random NPC pop up in a future adventure and otherwise useless items play a bigger role.

Most of all have fun with the players. Put on voices and accents.

For some great inspiration I would recommend going onto YouTube and finding old episodes of 1980’s British children’s TV show ‘Knightmare’.
