As of yesterday that is an understatement. Sony have pulled it and refunded all purchases just 2 weeks after release. This will be setting off alarm bells across the industry and result in many in-development games being canned, with job losses to sadly follow.
Like you say, Sony didn't read the room. Every live service title has to be treated as an MMO in terms of player time and nobody has room for more than one or two. I'm in my forties and been gaming since the eighties; I have invested years into Fortnite and FFXIV. What room do I have for anything new?
(The answer was actually Halo Infinite. Sometimes its just great to jump into a fast-paced shooter for half an hour just for the hell of it)
