We live in an age of constant technological innovation and keeping up with it all can leave you breathless. Into this gap has stepped YouTube. Dozens of channels have popped up over the last decade all reviewing the latest and greatest to help you, the consumer make an intelligent buying choice. What used to take magazines months to get on shop shelves, creators can have out in a matter of hours. But it wasn’t always this way.

Rewind 20 years and the internet is still taking shape. Mobile phones have more buttons than Cadburys and TVs have more depth than your college crush. Technology was a very different place with even more ideas and innovation popping up every day. If you were the sort of person who prefers to see something in action instead of just reading about it, where would you turn? Enter The Gadget Show. In 2005 I was just starting out selling consumer electronics in a popular UK department store and The Gadget Show was practically required reading. Every Monday night without fail I would be sat down in front of the TV at 7pm, eating my tea and soaking up the knowledge.

Perceived as a magazine show and presented by experts, UK TV outlet Channel 5’s weekly hour-long show aimed wide. Reviews concentrated on how products were in the real world by roping in members of the public. Tech journalists might pop up occasionally to talk…
