Did you happen to work for a reailer named after a popular asian dish by any chance? I only ask as I worked for John Lewis selling tech for 5 years and thoroughly agree with what you have said.

Also watch out for false deals where the price was artificially increased in October just so the retailer can claim a higher 'discount'. Our asian dish-named friend does this a lot.
