Don't discount the bountiful Apple preowned market. For 99% of course requirements including intensive CAD or number crunching the M1 Macbook Air is just as good as any current laptop and can be had for as little as $700.

I'd honestly skip a tablet unless drawing is a course requirement. That M1 MBA will do everything it does only better. (and I say this as a daily iPad Pro user)

A HomePod Mini is a great resource is you just want something to listen to music and podcasts on. $60 secondhand with great sound.

If the user needs a watch then a Series 4 can be had for as little as $100.

The thing worth spending money on is an iPhone. I would say a 13 as a minimum, still available on monthly installments on contract.
