Education has to hang around an unfortunate lie we have to tell teenagers: education ends with their finals. Whether thats your SATs in the USA or GCSEs in the UK, the lie is there to make sure young people actually try instead of being teenagers!
But as adults we know that education never really truly stops. We are all constantly learning new skills, teaching ourselves new things or reading. It might not have a formal structure but every day is indeed a school day! But we cannot tell teens this or they won't try.
In an ideal world we would have an education system that supports people's self-determination throughout their life. Sadly we expect all young people to be at the same benchmark at the same time and if you're not? No more support.
Along the way we forgot that the real purpose of education is to keep young people off the streets until they are civilised enough to enter society.
