Every arguement I have read against the DMA ignores two very important facts:

1. Even when Android operates an open platform (which is still tightly controller by Google; you can only open APKs on an app-by-app basis to sandbox any attempts by Chrome to hijack the process) and market leader Samsung operates its own storefront 95% of customers still choose to use the Play Store for all their downloads. Android gives users the choice of staying in the silo and most of them do.

(I’m a big lover of Apple products but I don’t think I’d ever describe their users as any sort of counter-culture given how influential Apple are in every industry they do business in. The rule breakers are arguably the 5% of Android users flashing new ROMs to their devices and experimenting with the entire operation of their phone)

2. The desktop market still exists where most users do not use any sort of app portal. iOS users are statistically going to own a Mac. Now I won’t argue that MacOS isn’t the best operating system for computers (because it is) but I have never heard anyone complain that they are able to download applications outside the Mac App Store and want the OS closed off. The same applies to users of Windows, Chrome and Linux.

And again the rule breakers and counter-culture is the hardcore users installing Linux on their hardware and having ultimate control outside of a tech ecosystem.
