For me it boils down to the story of Tony Faddell taking him the early iPod prototype and Jobs throwing it into a fish tank in his office. The air bubbles that came out prompted Jobs to demand they make it smaller.
This was him in a nutshell. As you say he knew how to drive people to their very best work when they not have even been aware themselves but he was also a shrewd businessman and knew how to exploit profit margins.
It’s worth pointing out that he also knew the value of gateway products. Under Jobs we might have had expensive-for-their-day £1000 PowerBooks but we also had the £129 iPod Nano we couldn’t keep in stock at work. He refinished the benefits of showing people the lifestyle through low priced commodities.
(As an aside I agree with all your points in the article but I wouldn’t use the propaganda rag of the Daily Mail as a reference in anything other than how not to run a newspaper!)
