Gaming has always been decentralised. True, most players prefer the output and consoles of a company like Nintendo but since the dawn of computing anyone with some coding skills and an idea has been able to build it and distribute it on the PC without relying on a publisher. Ralph Baer didn’t need a centralised storefront for Space War! and Eric Barone didn’t need one when he self-published Stardew Valley.
