Genuine question from an ignorant Englishman: Americans, why Trump?

All I have to go on is foreign media think pieces and statistics. We never hear any voices from the average swing voter over here, only the fringe lunatics.

Arguements about making things great or just keeping the democrats out are just soundbites. How was DT on the economy? Education? Were employment prospects better?
