Great article :)
One reason The Expanse works so well is that you don't really need to know about the history of the Earth/Mars conflicts because it just as easily parallels the Cold War. Once they introduce the extraterrestrial elements to the series it is again largely left a mystery, with the lore revealing itself as the characters themselves learn more about it. At its heart though is a human story about a found family.
Dave Filoni has a deep obsession with the lore of Star Wars (which quickly rears its head again in episode 1 of Ahsoka) but doesn't forget to tell the story within that. He goes into all sorts of places with the force and yet doesn't forget to remind us that the real story is that Palpatine is a git.
Horizon Zero Dawn is such a great game because it sensibly divides the lore and story into two seperate quest lines, with Aloy trying to find her origins on one hand and helping the tribes on the other.
