Has iOS been chosen for its security or have Apple's marketing convinced the market to do so?

I'm not trying to hate on Apple; they make reliable products I use every day. But the Mac has become a popular and innovative open computing platform. Apple have their portal but you can download from the open web.

Consider as a case study how we went from a fun, breezy open internet that powered all sorts of neat services into highly controlled social media networks effectively becoming the internet for too many people.

Over-centralising a platform is not a good thing. Its like having a totalitarian government. Just because they come across as benevolent does not mean they are. Apple hoover up just as much data as Google; they just hoard it all to sell more iPhones rather than ad space. And it works!

The iPhone has become an old pair of slippers, tired but comfortable. Perhaps opening up their platform to rival services might force them to improve their own?
