Horror has proven it just doesn’t work on as big budget bets from the studios. Large FX just ends up looking terrible whereas a lesser director on a shoestring can use practical effects and make things utterly chilling.

I would strongly argue that the only decent horror to come out of Hollywood between Blair Witch and Stranger Things was Joe Dante’s hideously underrated classic The Hole.

Into that gap has stepped other directors from other countries. Brit-Horror had a think at the turn of the century which achieved some terrific scares on low budgets. Neil Marshall’s Dog Soldiers and The Descent, Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later and Deathwatch, a WW1 horror movie that has since doubled in entertainment value due to the horrific death of one of the characters who is played by an actor who has gone on to become something of a figure of ridicule in British politics.
