My day job as a Lab Technician takes me to many different places and about once a month I take the 160-mile train journey from Yorkshire (where I live) to London. It is here I lead a workshop at the Science Museum, talking to young people about technical careers as part of their Technicians Gallery program.
As this is an employer-supported volunteer scheme I take my on-the-road work computer with me, my trusty iPad Pro. Originally requested because I wanted to find a cost effective way for students to produce environmental scans, the iPad has since morphed into an all-purpose device used for everything from building vector graphics for laser cutting to making live recordings of experiments.
My usage case for the iPad is niche-but-deep and I can think of no other computer that has such a breadth of functionality. Although I still think the average user would be better off with the Air model I could never swap such a useful digital Swiss Army knife for anything else. Or at least…
