I actually think the entertainment uses for VR are inherently limited by human culture. You want to be courtside at an NBA game with your friends, shouting at the ref or cheering them on together. Even if you watch on TV it is likely done with a group. You go to concerts to be part of the crowd, singing along with other fans and making new friends.
The same applies to gaming. Even if I’m playing a large single player title my son will sit next to me and offer hints. Online Mario Kart and Smash Bros. Is largely soulless compared to getting people on the couch. Post-pandemic we realise the dangerous mental health issues surrounding isolation.
Stories like Ready Player One, Snow Crash, Adventure Time and The Matrix were all cautionary tales where people had abandoned the real world because it had become a totalitarian nightmare or succumbed to environmental disaster and the dangers of doing so.
But.
But……
The Vision Pro is an incredible piece of technology! To think this is the worst AR is ever going to get is quite exciting for a lot of reasons. I think the primary customers are going to be businesses that can swallow the cost. I can think of hundreds of uses for the device around my lab.
This thing is going to do what HoloLens could not. But its not the future of entertainment.
