I don’t think a superman film needs something for him to punch if I’m honest. I like parts of the movies best when the heroes are saving people as it makes them a lot more relatable. Perhaps I’m being a little bit harsh on Lex Luthor’s crooked real estate plan? I know it sounds like something from Scooby Doo but it’s actually the sort of thing I mean.
Joss Whedon understood this to a tee by, as you say having The Avengers seen from ground level and defending the everyday citizens of New York and in Ultron they managed to save all the people on the flying city before then having the big scrap. I also think of Fantastic 4 on Brooklyn Bridge or the never-beaten Spider-Man 2 train sequence.
Its been a while since I’ve watched Christopher Reeve but my underlying memory is when he uses his breath to freeze the surface of the lake and then carry the ice to a burning city to put out a fire.
We’ve seen a lot of genre’s moved into comic book territory (shout out to Antman 1’s heist movie) and I wonder why nobody has attempted a classic disaster movie?
