I grew up playing what I’d coin BGRPGs, that is board game RPGs. This started out with HeroQuest in the 1990’s but grew into what I consider the pinnacle of the genre, the now defunct Warhammer Quest.

This let you throw down a card-deck managed dungeon or have a GM devise their own. The combat crucially never got in the way of the fun and there was a plethora of fun to be had.
