I still see lots of needlessly complex titles where the rule tracking gets in the way of the actual gameplay.

The original 1990’s Warhammer Quest is still the gold standard for TTRPGs, with all rules on cards but an easy to remember D6 system for all rolls. Actions became simple maths instead of which coloured dice did what and characteristics are plain English instead of esoteric symbols.

A more streamlined ruleset then allows an imaginative GM to put their own spin on the game and add depth through narrative. See also: HeroQuest which has had a successful reboot of late with nearly a dozen expansions.
