I think of the Mateix where Neo appears in the training program as his ‘Digital Residual Self’, a clever physical representation of early internet anonymity or explaining how people recreate a version of themselves in videogames.

We were all able to define who we wanted to be, hiding behind pseudonyms and forum avatars. This was all incredibly liberating for a teenager as it allowed wearing multiple masks with little social risk.

It’s a shame the internet has become so visual and that positive anonymity has now died.
