I think there is a heck of a lot more room for innovation in visual design. It needs to go down to an OS level but has to start somewhere.

Ergonomics is an area a lot of software really needs to improve things. Assuming it runs in portrait I should be able to use 100% of an apps’ functionality with one hand without over-reaching, resorting to a devices’ poorly-implemented ‘one-hand-mode’ or having to stretch my thumb. I’d put good money on a high percentage of phone breakages being caused by a user over-reaching with one hand.

All interactions should be in the bottom third of the screen and anything less is a failure of ergonomics and accessibility. Now app design leads from the top and it is largely the fault of Apple and Google for not rebuilding their respective OSes for the default 6” screen paradigm that dominates the market. We still have small-screen interactions on big-screen devices.

But they also follow the trends and there needs to be a movement of ‘Ergo-morphism’ or whatever term the community comes up with to lead the way.
