I think you’ve hit on some great points, David. GPT was undoubtedly one of those big moments that snuck up on everyone and its results are damned impressive. I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t used it myself to draft a job application letter for my wife or a homework essay for my son before adding and extrapolating to it. I saw a teacher feed it a model exam answer and mark scheme and it spat back the same marks the teacher gave. If it were me I’d be putting it into working hard on my pile of paperwork.

Google’s Bard just isn’t as comprehensive in its output but there is a reason for this. GPT scrapes every piece of data it can find and Google know their reputation is somewhat sullied by its use of customer data for advertising; Bard doesn’t scrape as much data because Google doesn’t want another product with that reputation again.

Apple being cautious is a good thing because as useful as this tech is, has it reached mass market penetration yet? Does the average person in the street really care? If Apple can demonstrate it can add value to its products on-device without needing a large data model behind it then woah!
