I won't argue Massimo Vignelli shouldn't be included but the New York Subway map was arguably a derivative of Harry Beck's seminal 1932 London Underground map.

I would also add Abram Games who designed the wartime propaganda posters for the British Government. His influence can be seen in everything from the clean lines of modern flat design to the title sequence to The Incredibles.
