I would argue it has had a debilitating effect on tech writers. These guys were a key driver of Medium traffic, openly admitting they were earning $1-2k a month in some respects based on views and engagement.

But to combat the idea of AI written articles the entire tech sector has been under-promoted and is now, after only a few weeks on its knees with bloggers earning less than a few hundred dollars or worse.

One guy I read went from a dependable $6-700 a month to less than $30. Talented writers will end up going elsewhere if they have turned blogging into their business.

All Medium seems to care about now is sensationalist headlines; they’ve even cut the subtitle from article listings. I will admit that the amount of obviously AI-written content that has popped up has been reduced to nearly nothing but it isn’t AI that is cutting people’s livelihoods but the ever mysterious ‘Algorithm’.

I come to Medium to read tech articles and instead of things that would really interest me the algorithm changes are throwing up all sorts of crap I couldn’t care less about.
