I would go one better and say that we could convert old office buildings into vertical farms. This creates local jobs, reduces the carbon footprint of ingredients and allows the company to sell directly to the consumer without a middle person (the supermarket) taking all the wealth for themselves. These buildings have ample grid connections and startup projects have proven it works.
We need to rethink the entire process of work. Why have a zoom meeting; if a colleague lives nearby catch up over a coffee or at the park whilst you walk the dog. Forward thinking small businesses have already decamped to the suburbs where they’ve discovered WFHers still want a fresh Latte and a Pastry in the morning even if they can make it all at home.
What destroying the office gives us back most of all is time. That time spent commuting can be spent with your kids before taking them to school yourself or just working making your afternoon that bit more relaxing. A productive workplace will measure jobs done not time spent.
