I would have thought its because it was set to DDMMYY like the rest of the globe and as soon as they saw it display 13/01/56 and burned it at the stake for heresy ;)

Joking aside there is actually a pendulum at the Science Museum in London that is so long (around 4 storeys) that it perpetually rotates without additional power based solely on the gravitational rotation of the earth.
