I'd like to counter that previous comment with a more positive one: I don't think a metaverse will have anything positive to add as an engrossing VR environment but I think it has lots of potential as an always-on AR environment that adds the useful information the internet is full of and overlays it with IRL.

Imagine for example being able to pull up HUD-videos of repair tutorials whilst you fix a machine at work that shows you which parts go where. Imagine there being a 3D hologram of a deceased loved one you can call up and see sat there in the chair in the corner whenever you miss them, like a photograph brought to life. Imagine being able to see the actors on a theatre production right there in front of you in your own living room.

Think less the dystopian escapes of Ready Player One or Snow Crash and more the added-value product of the Faro Focus from the pre-apocalypse world of Horizon Zero Dawn.
