I'd thoroughly recommend The One Device by Bryan Merchant which chronicles the creation of the original iPhone. It goes into great detail about the individual bits of technology that built it, from the Lithium and Cobalt mines of South America through PARC and Motorola to Victorian portable telephony.

Its brilliant because it makes you realise not only how really revolutionary the device was but also where all the tech that goes into our phones comes from.
