If a section of society is disillusioned with both it's because of how far left they have personally moved internally. Blue and Red are both right wing parties, just one is further right than the other. The Dems are about parallel with the Tories here in the UK where we also have the centric Labour and left Lib Dem parties.

There are a lot of Americans ready for European levels of state engagement with no candidates that represent that issue.
