If I was working on what I thought was a new industry defining AR headset but didn't want competitors releasing inferior alpha versions just to get the jump (like they did with the Watch) then I would also invent a skunkworks project as cover to just collect real world sensor data for my headset dev team.

Then as soon as my headset reaches market and I have customer data to work from, I would fold my non-existant car project.
