I'm more concerned at a country like the USA, where taking any time off is apparently seen as a weakness has 10 public holidays whereas the UK, or more specifically England only has 8!

A nice easy win for the new government (who could do with a few right now) would be to propose and promptly sign into law 2 more annual bank holidays.

Two pretty obvious ones would be 8th September as Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Day and 5th November as Guy Fawkes Day.

QE2 Day might be a hard sell because it's so close to the August bank holiday and the start of the new school year.

Guy Fawkes Day/Bonfire Night is an easy one. Most people still do something to mark the occasion anyway and there are no public holidays between August and Christmas.

Some might propose St. George's Day but it's too close to April/May where they all currently bunch up. An annual holiday for a Roman soldier seems a bit daft.

As most (if not all) of our public holidays are related to the church it might make more sense to nick another one of theirs. Id therefore suggest Shrove Tuesday as the 2nd holiday.
