I'm not convinced there is much desire from customers for Apple to open up their platform but the counter point would be the Mac operates as an open system perfectly well.

Opening up some of the ecosystem wouldn't hurt them in the long run though. I'm sure there are probably millions of Android owners who would love an Apple Watch; why not tap into a new vein of income?

The increased competition in that space might make them pull their finger out on some hardware improvements as well which benefits everyone.
