It may be that Judas was not the villain but instead the fall guy. If (and its always an if because we cannot ask him face to face) Jesus' ultimate plan was to attempt to become a living sacrifice then he would have had to put some pieces on the board to set things in motion.

This is niether the time nor the place to discuss whether he knew the outcome of events before they happened but if he knew he had to try, somebody had to sell him out in secret away from his brethren because outright surrender would have looked suspicious.
