It might be if we had a better way to harness the energy given off during fission but instead we are still wasting it boiling water, a liquid with an exceptionally high specific heat capacity at room temperature. In other words Nuclear might sound futuristic but its just another way of making use of victorian steam power. So much for technological progress.
Renewables* and energy storage allow us to not only make use of vast swathes of otherwise useless plains for mass generation but also hyper-localise energy production and remove the need for transference over long distances.
*What we need to do is regulate the fossil fuels industry so that the output is funnelled into the manufacture of renewable infrastructure and not being wasted on crap like happy meal toys or indeed even more victorian technology like the internal combusiton engine.
