It was never a bad ending; it just wasn't long enough. Had HBO stumped for 3 more episodes it would have given the script time to breath to set up the motivations of key characters.

Instead, due to the shorter number we just jump from set piece to set piece like some sort of boss rush. So I don't blame the writers. I blame Warner Bros.
