Its a clever way of using otherwise useless screen real estate and hopefully Apple will roll it out to all their models next year.

What they could then do is use it as a replacement for the notification shade by swapping the swipe-down spotlight gesture for bringing up notifications (like on Android….) as we now have a button that does that.
