Its also the societal change brought on by technology. Humans are slow to accept change unless the status quo is somehow threatened as can be seen at how fast we can mobilise against a physical military invasion but not accept the inherent rights of a marginalised group.

One of the reasons that we have seen such a huge rise on populist politics in recent years is due to the internet telling society that it must accept the newest weekly change it demands without realising it takes time for these things to sink in to the real world. This ‘cancel culture’ is then preyed upon by reactionary politicians. The word ‘woke’ means to want a more progressive society (a good thing!) and this has been twisted into an insult, as if wanting equality for all is somehow a negative. (which it most certainly is not)

Don’t misunderstand what I am saying: these marginalised groups DESERVE the rights, dignity and equality they are fighting for. I cannot stress enough how much I believe this. But it sometimes seems to the older generations that there is a new battle each month, thanks in a large part to how swiftly communities can react and gather via the internet and it can be difficult to keep up.
