It’s not that there shouldn’t be anything outside the hot zone but things everybody needs access to all the time like notifications and device control switches should be within easy reach.

Palm’s WebOS used to have notifications that stacked from the bottom. The problem has already been solved; they just haven’t implemented it yet.
