Its worth mentioning The One Device by Brian Merchant. Intersperced between the chapters telling the story of the iPhone are backstories into its core technologies and materials.

Started as a skunkworks project at Apple right under Jobs nose, the initial idea was a tablet computer. Their prototype was a projector and an office table! When Jobs saw it he asked for it to be turned into a smartphone instead. Two teams produced two different ideas.

The smartphone wasn't Jobs' invention at all. But it was shepherded under his watch by a huge team of talented programmers, designers and engineers. The iPhone was that once-a-generation product that fulfilled the last decade's promises of convergence and revolutionised everything.
