Looking at the court data it seems like Epic suing Apple was actually a waste of time. 95% of their Fortnite revenue came from console and PC players so they weren’t actually giving that much money to Apple in the grand scheme of things so why bother?

The data shows that a whopping 70% of their Fortnite revenue came from PlayStation platforms alone and Sony still take a 30% cut of all that. Why not sue Sony? Surely that is more lucrative?

Epic were however very clever in their actions. There was already some disgruntlement about Apple’s cut from some devs and they were an easier target. Nobody was complaining about paying Sony 30% and Epic is not stupid enough to bite the hand that feeds it.

Epic knew that they wouldn’t beat Apple but the amount they probably spent on lawyers was a lot less than the free marketing the press were providing them. But if they won? They could then turn around to Sony and Microsoft and ask to put the Epic Games Store on their consoles and they wouldn’t have a leg to stand on saying no.

In the end they got their free marketing and Microsoft did at least lower its dev fees.

If we get rival app portals on iOS I wonder if we will start to see more exclusivity deals from Apple designed to stifle the competition? If you’re into mobile gaming Apple Arcade is already a steal and those games are nowhere near Android; what if they launched an ‘Apple Portfolio’ sub for the same cost that bundled more professional apps instead to keep them away from other stores?
