Religion is almost the final taboo of society, something kept personal for fear of reprisal. The majority of 'popular culture' theists and atheists who take things at face value offer only one-sided conversations with no room for nuance.
I found it quite brave of Dreamworks then to launch their studio back in the day not with a fantasy musical but instead the story of Moses. Even if you think the Bible is no different to the Ilyiad, its still full of great stories. The same is also true of works based on religious popular culture. Constantine, Supernatural and Diablo 3 all come to mind.
Real life inspires the same. Hacksaw Ridge was a brilliant movie. Chariots of Fire is a stone cold classic. Note the pushback when Indiana Jones moved from biblical relics to extraterrestrial ones.
