Revelation is largely a symbolic/allegorical text that, much like the first book of the Bible is meant to be seen more as poetic than literal. If the author witnessed a vision of a boiling saucepan on a stove and did not understand it (because he was 2000 years early) he might have described it as a lake of fire.
