Social media broke down the fences though without asking whether they were there for a reason. Prior to the absolute disaster of Web2 we had Web1, the DIY internet. Forums and newsgroups existed for every interest and you could be whoever you wanted. Want to set up your own? Learn HTML and do just that!
But these were also siloed communities which importantly kept the fringe elements at the fringes. Socials brought the walls down and in doing so introduced fringe elements to a wider audience and forever broke democracy.
If Mark Zuckerberg wanted to make the world a better place he could liquidate Facebook and give every employee a £1m severance. Social Media might be here to stay but that doesn’t mean it was a good idea.
