Most of the stuff mentioned in various software UX articles I wouldn’t necessarily teach my old physical product design class students.

Not that software designers do not do a great job because they do! But not every application necessarily solves a problem. Indeed they weigh heavily towards the aesthetics end but not so much the ergonomics and accessibility one.
