The core theme of the show, according to the writers is absent and crappy fathers, centred a lot around a Star Wars theme. The round windows in Rupert’s office couldn’t be more Emperor’s throne room if they tried!

We learn Ted lost his at a young age which is what led to his ‘aw shucks’ nature (taking after his mother!). Rupert is a terrible father to his daughter, seeking sexual liaisons over parenthood. All Nate wants to do is please his father. Sam’s dad visits in season 2 to remind him of his roots. Jamie’s dad is, up until the latest episode a nasty piece of work. Nate also gets the affirmation from Ted he craved from his own father.

At the centre of all this is a love story involving Ted and his son, Henry. As with many mid-season TV commentary pieces we can see that this article has massively dated as we have seen some strong resolutions to a lot of the father-related issues, particularly Nate, Jamie and Roy.

As we move into the finale the final pieces will be moved into place. Ted’s obvious decision to move back to Kansas at the end of the series kind of invalidates this entire piece really.

Should have waited until this Thursday!
